An important way in which we differentiate our team building activities from others is through the use of theming. When participants have been in a room throughout the day, theming creates an immediate change from the familiar environment. Theming allows us to enhance any of our sessions to another level entirely.
Participants are presented with a wide variety of changes when they enter the room, which provide the initial surprise. For example, Junk Funk participants enter to find a mountain of household junk. With hazard tape, traffic cones, bin bags, step ladders and newspapers, the room is instantly transformed into an urban setting. We next empty our huge industrial bins that contain every imaginable junk percussion item, to create a scrap yard orchestra. With Junk Funk, our facilitators can theme your room in under five minutes! This is really useful if we have to set up during a coffee break.
Theming plays a vital role in our evening and dinner activities too. With our Fat Sam’s Speak Easy, your pre-dinner drinks reception can be dramatically turned into a prohibition-style ‘jazz joint’. As participants perform the Charleston, the ambience is substantially enhanced by the presence of our flapper girls, sparkling tinsel draping around the wall and our sultry jazz singer performing in the corner.
Our Bollywood option is all about incredible India. Groups learning a Bollywood dance routine can be surrounded by bright colours, iconic Hindu billboards, Sanskrit writing and sumptuous fabric textures to gain inspiration from these eastern flavours.
Our drumming and Haka options have many tribal connotations so we often theme the room as a tropical jungle or forest. We use long tree vines, huge banana leaves, traditional hanging tribal masks, colourful tribal throws and draped up-lit hessian cloth around the room, to create an exotic natural setting.
With Thriller, where participants learn the famous Michael Jackson routine, a smoke machine and eerie lighting turn the most standard conference room into a bone chilling movie set, especially when everyone is in zombie costumes and graveyard make up!
Urban Jam is a rotational multi-activity where people taking part get a taste of urban or street arts including rapping and human beat box, street dance, body popping and graffiti painting. Theming plays a crucial role in this session, culminating in a themed finale performance that incorporates a massive graffiti wall, costumed performers and night club lighting.
With our Antiques Auction, we use actual lots, pretending to be for sale, to create a realistic auction house atmosphere around the dining room or pre-dinner drinks area. Large pieces of antique furniture, painting canvasses and unidentifiable sculptures surround the auctioneer and his or her lectern.
If your objective is to create, for your group, the most inspiring conditions to engage with, then theming is a fantastic option. No matter what the budget available, theming makes a considerable difference to the involvement level of participants and their lasting memories.
