Hello to all our regular blog readers! My name is Emma Barfield and I am the most recent recruit to the Creative Team Events team. As I will be speaking and working with all our repeat and new clients, I wanted to introduce myself formally, to allow you to put a face to my name. I also wanted to provide you with a glimpse from new eyes of what goes on behind the scenes here at Creative!
On my first day, I arrived full of new job spirit, all ripped and ready to dive in, with sleek hair and crisp clothes, in preparation for the usual ‘corporate first day’ full of information on fire exits and first aid boxes.
After my initial job interview, which included a practical aptitude test of hand-bell ringing followed by a grilling about which biscuits ruled the world, I should have known that this was not going to be just your average office job. As I am typing this now, I am nestled in among African Djembe drums and a go-kart with a giant box of assorted rubber gloves at my feet!
I spent my first day packing up 100 drums for an event we had in London and, on my second day, I was up at 3am. After this, my first month absolutely flew by in a colourful whizz of African-themed conference rooms, gumboot dancers, Maori warriors, Thriller zombies and hundreds of rubber gloves. I’m now officially ‘Clap Happy’!
I’m now delving deeper and deeper into the ‘real’ office processes involving client proposals, creating bespoke events and translating event concepts into actual logistics. I can honestly say that I’ve never worked anywhere quite like Creative Team Events and I am truly loving the experience.
It’s not often that you’re asked to take a drum home and ‘let go’ for homework, or to yodel on the spot at any point in the day just because your boss wants to see just how far he can push my “in-the-moment spontaneity”!
What has impressed me the most so far is the unique mixture of creativity and organisation. The fun and creative atmosphere really helps to initially inspire those making event enquiries but then the emphasis rapidly focuses on the ‘nuts and bolts’ and the critical realities of delivery, personnel and event content. As I hear very often in the office, “We are deadly serious about fun”.
It’s also been a pleasure meeting the many artists, musicians, instructors and choreographers that are out there ‘in the field’ delivering the events for us. It is obvious they all have the driving passion and spirit to do a fantastic job and exceed client expectations.
While learning about all the activities we supply and getting to know our regular clients’ needs, I have still been able to spend a few moments quietly rehearsing – before unleashing – my own new office skill – the very popular and current party trick ‘The Cup Song’ from the movie ‘Pitch Perfect’. In my opinion, this is the greatest party trick of all time and we may even develop it into a fun ice breaker for clients!
I look forward to speaking with you soon.
