Following in the footsteps of Julie Andrews, I brought singing to the Swiss Alps this week for the purpose of bonding groups together! Working on overseas events is always exciting but also a little nerve-racking. This is not because of the nature of our events as we execute these on a daily basis. It is more because of the logistics involved in ensuring everything and everybody arrive at the venue at the right time and all in one piece.
The arrival in Geneva of our keyboards, stands, AV equipment and, of course, our vocal coaches went without a hitch. Our minibus also arrived on time and, before we knew it, we were on our way to Montreux, which is about 85km from Geneva, at the far side of the beautiful Lake Geneva.
We were to deliver a One Voice team building singing session to a group of international delegates, who did not speak English as their first language!
Having left home at 3am to catch the early flight, we all grabbed a quick lunch before setting up the rooms and performing a sound check in preparation for the session later in the evening.
I should be honest and say that the delegates were somewhat shocked, and a little apprehensive, on hearing that they were going to be transformed into an amazing singing choir!
However, in no time at all, our vocal coaches had put the delegates at ease with a fun and uplifting vocal warm-up activity.
The team was then split into two groups, and each group was sent off with their own vocal coach to their training room. Here, participants learnt all their specific harmonies and backing vocals. We built upon each little success to foster confidence and belief, and people quickly relaxed and put their hearts into the music.
We brought everyone back into one room for the final performance. The transformation from the stunned delegates at the beginning of the session was quite amazing!
The sound that the group was able to create together was true testament not only to the professionalism and talent of our vocal coaches but also to the effort and work that each and every delegate had put into their song in their training room.
The final performance was an uplifting experience for all of the delegates, who truly went away with ‘one voice’ and as one team!
One Voice is a perfect example of a powerful team experience that can be hosted anywhere in the world with little logistical fuss. The event went without a hitch, and we left a delighted client to head back to the UK.
